SOUND DESIGNER CALLOUT
North East based: Queer identifying Sound Designer for R&D: What Adult Am I?
We’re looking for a queer-identifying sound designer based in the North East to join the early R&D phase of our upcoming dance theatre production, What Adult Am I. Applicants must be currently based in the North East of England.
This is an early phase of research and development (R&D), and we are looking to begin conversations and collaborations with a sound designer for a few days within this phase. Studio dates will run intermittently from May–August.
What Adult Am I explores adulthood through a queer and comedic lens, with a particular focus on lesbian narratives. The work challenges traditional norms around adulthood, celebrating queer stories, voices, and experiences that are often muted or overlooked. The process is collaborative, exploratory, and process-led, combining movement, text, and sound as interconnected creative languages.
This role will involve a mix of studio-based and on-location research work, including:
Sampling and collecting sound
Editing and layering audio
Creating small, textured soundscape elements
Responding to movement and text material in development
Collaborating closely with the creative team during R&D
We’re particularly interested in artists who enjoy experimental approaches, narrative sound-making, and collaborative practice within early-stage creation.
Dates: Intermittent studio sessions between May–August (exact dates to be confirmed with the lead artist)
Fee: £900
Location: North East England (in-person work required)
To apply please send a short introduction/ website link, examples of your work, and any relevant experience to: alicia_meehan@hotmail.co.uk
Deadline: 9th May 5pm
